Aesthetic treatments in Berkeley

Three Elmwood dermatology offices with 1,200 reviews between them, med spas at Bay Street and El Cerrito Plaza, and Botox quoting a dollar or two under San Francisco.

Non-surgical Surgical
Elmwood and Ashby Avenue (Alta Bates corridor)Telegraph AvenueBay Street, EmeryvilleEl Cerrito Plaza

Dermatology, not med spas, anchors Berkeley. Three of the nine tracked clinics are physician dermatology groups within a few blocks of Alta Bates in Elmwood: AllSkin Dermatology at 2828 Telegraph Avenue, Golden State Dermatology on Woolsey Street and NorCal Dermatology Group on Webster Street, and together they hold 1,210 of the market’s 1,876 reviews. The med spa side has moved to the edges. Bay Street in Emeryville has LaserAway and Monroe Aesthetics in neighbouring buildings, El Cerrito Plaza has Drop of Paradise and Naturally Beautiful Aesthetics, and two Oakland practices that Berkeley patients use, FACE on Piedmont Avenue and Refine Anti-Aging on Grand Avenue by Lake Merritt, round out the list. Oakland has its own page on ClinicCompass; those two are here because they sit closer to south Berkeley than to downtown Oakland.

Injectables are universal and the alternatives unusually deep. All nine menus list Botox, dermal fillers, lip filler, cheek filler and jawline filler. Dysport reaches four menus, Xeomin, Daxxify and Jeuveau three each, so a patient who wants a specific toxin can find it here without going to the city. Kybella is on seven menus, Sculptra and Radiesse on three, SkinVive at FACE and Monroe, and Monroe is the one listing for polynucleotides.

The device bench follows the dermatology weighting. Laser skin resurfacing and BBL photofacial are on eight menus, microneedling on eight and RF microneedling on six, but Morpheus8 by name is on only three and laser hair removal on five, because the dermatology groups list the modality rather than the brand. Ultherapy is at Golden State and Refine, CoolSculpting at Golden State and LaserAway, spider vein treatment at AllSkin and Golden State. Refine is the wellness outlier, the one menu with medical weight loss, peptide therapy and testosterone replacement therapy, and four menus list hair restoration.

Botox quotes $15 to 17 per unit, level with Oakland’s Piedmont Avenue and $1 to 2 under San Francisco, with filler $850 to 1,000 per syringe and a six-session laser hair removal package $950 to 1,400 for a mid-sized area. LaserAway’s chain pricing at Bay Street undercuts the independents on laser packages; the dermatology offices price injectables at the top of the range and resurfacing in the middle. Walnut Creek, through the Caldecott Tunnel, is not cheaper, and Richmond and San Pablo have almost no supply, which is why El Cerrito Plaza books fill from the north.

Saturdays belong to the med spas. LaserAway runs 10 to 6 Saturday and Sunday and to 8 pm Monday through Thursday, Naturally Beautiful 10 to 6, Monroe 10 to 5, FACE noon to 5, and Refine opens Sundays 10 to 4 instead of Saturdays. None of the three Elmwood dermatology offices opens weekends; NorCal closes Fridays and AllSkin closes for lunch from noon to 1:30, so plan those around a weekday. The Cal calendar shapes demand more than the weather: new-patient volume rises in late August and January with the semesters, and laser series start in September to finish before the May fog lifts. Patients come from Albany, Kensington, Piedmont and the hill towns through the tunnel, Orinda and Lafayette.

The nine average 4.73 across 1,876 reviews, two at a flat 5.0. The lower average is the dermatology effect: Golden State and NorCal each carry 400-plus reviews at 4.5, the volume of medical dermatology rather than a cosmetic-only book, and they are the places to ask for a physician injector. At the med spas ask who the medical director is and whether they are on site. Tick the clinics that fit below and ClinicCompass passes your consultation request to each.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Also called hrt

Prescription estrogen, progesterone and sometimes testosterone for perimenopause and menopause symptoms, offered at med spas as FDA-approved patches and gels or as compounded "bioidentical" creams and pellets. FAQ

Common questions about med spas in Berkeley

Is going to a med spa safe?

Yes, when you pick the right one. Med spas with physician oversight (an MD or DO medical director) and treatments performed by licensed RNs, NPs, PAs, or physicians have a strong safety record. The biggest safety risks come from undertrained operators using aggressive settings, off-brand products, or skipping proper screening. In Berkeley, all clinics listed on ClinicCompass include verified Google ratings. Read the review themes (look for consistent mentions of cleanliness, professionalism, and clear communication) before booking.

What should I expect at my first med spa appointment?

Most first visits start with a 20–45 minute consultation (no actual treatment yet). The provider will ask about your goals, medical history, medications, and budget; they'll examine the relevant area and recommend specific treatments. You should leave with a written plan, clear pricing, and realistic expectations of results. If you feel rushed, pressured to commit on the spot, or upsold on treatments you didn't ask about, that's a red flag. Walk away and consult elsewhere.

When will I see results from CoolSculpting?

Early changes appear around 3 weeks after treatment. The most dramatic results show at 1–3 months as your body clears the destroyed fat cells through the lymphatic system. Clinical studies report an average 20–25% fat reduction in the treated area per session. Berkeley CoolSculpting providers usually schedule a 90-day follow-up to assess results and discuss whether a second session is warranted.

Can I drink alcohol before getting Botox or fillers?

Skip alcohol for 24 hours before injectables and for at least 24 hours after: alcohol thins the blood and significantly increases bruising risk. If you bruise easily or are getting a larger treatment, extend to 48 hours afterward. Also avoid blood-thinning supplements (vitamin E, fish oil, garlic, gingko) and OTC NSAIDs (Advil, aspirin) for 5–7 days before treatment unless medically necessary.

What's the difference between Botox and fillers?

Different treatments for different problems. Botox is a neurotoxin that relaxes the muscles causing expression wrinkles (forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet). It doesn't add volume. Fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Sculptra) add volume to soft tissue, replacing what aging has depleted in cheeks, jawline, lips, smile lines. Most patients over 35 use BOTH: Botox for the upper face, fillers for the lower face. A consultation will tell you which is right for your specific concerns.

What's the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Both are botulinum toxin type A: same active mechanism, slightly different formulations. Dysport tends to onset 1–2 days faster and may spread slightly more (useful for broad areas like the forehead). Botox is more localized (useful for precise areas like around the eyes). Duration is similar (3–4 months for both). Per-unit pricing differs but the per-treatment cost is comparable. The biggest factor in your results is your injector's skill, not the brand.
