What can be done about hooded eyelids?
Hooded upper lids come from skin, from a dropped brow, or from both. Working out which one you have is the difference between a treatment that works and one that wastes your money.
Treatments for hooded eyes, compared
Best-first, with honest notes on when each is the right call.
| Treatment | Typical cost | Downtime | When it's the right call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blepharoplasty | $3,200–$7,500 per procedure | 7 to 10 days of visible bruising and swelling, most people return to work in about a week | The definitive fix when the hooding is excess eyelid skin. Upper blepharoplasty removes that skin through an incision hidden in the lid crease, takes about an hour, and typically lasts ten to fifteen years. If skin rests on your lashes, this is the operation that removes it. |
| Botox | $200–$600 per treatment area | None — return to normal activity right away | A modest brow lift, not a fix for skin. Carefully placed Botox can raise the outer brow a few millimeters, which opens the eye slightly. It helps when the hooding is mild and brow position is the issue. Placed poorly in the forehead it makes hooding worse by dropping the brow further. |
| Morpheus8 | $700–$1,500 per session | 1–5 days of redness and minor swelling | Tightens the skin around the eye modestly and improves crepey texture. Reasonable for very early changes or as maintenance. It will not lift skin that folds over the crease. |
| Laser Skin Resurfacing | $500–$3,500 per session | 1–2 days (non-ablative) up to 1–2 weeks (ablative) | Improves the quality and fine lines of eyelid skin rather than the amount of it. Often paired with surgery rather than used instead of it. |
Hooded Eyes: common questions
How do I know if it is my eyelid or my brow?
Look in a mirror and gently lift your eyebrow upward with a finger. If the hooding largely disappears, your brow position is the driver and a brow lift or carefully placed Botox addresses it. If the fold of skin remains sitting on the lid or lashes even with the brow lifted, that is excess eyelid skin, and only blepharoplasty removes it. Many people have both, which is why the two procedures are often performed together.
Will insurance cover hooded eyelid surgery?
Sometimes, when the hooding is severe enough to obstruct your vision, and only for upper lids. Carriers require a documented visual field test showing the obstruction, performed by an eye specialist. If your hooding is significant enough that you find yourself raising your brows to see, it is genuinely worth having the test done before assuming this is an out-of-pocket cosmetic procedure.
Do eye creams help hooded eyes?
No. Eye creams can improve skin hydration, fine lines, and pigment around the eye, and none of those are what causes hooding. Hooding is an amount-of-tissue problem and a brow-position problem. Any product marketed as lifting a hooded lid is describing a temporary tightening film effect that lasts hours.
Is there a non-surgical option that actually works?
For mild hooding driven by brow descent, yes, Botox placed to lift the outer brow produces a genuine if small change. For hooding caused by excess skin, honestly no. Devices tighten skin quality but do not remove skin, and the fold remains. A consultation that promises to eliminate a significant hood without surgery is describing an outcome it cannot deliver.
