Breast lifts occasionally take place in a hospital, but more often they are performed in an outpatient facility under general anesthesia.
With a breast lift (mastopexy) , incisions are generally made around the areola and extend down the bottom side of the breast and along the lower crease.
A breast lift repositions the breasts higher on the chest, elevates the nipple–areola complex, and reshapes the tissue for a firmer, natural appearance and is often combined with breast implants for a more comprehensive outcome.
Breast lift surgery at the St. Louis-based West County Plastic Surgeons can involve one of three incisions: periareolar (around the circular pigmented area surrounding the nipple), vertical (around the areola and down in a line, to make a lollipop shape), or Weiss
This breast reduction technique uses liposuction to remove excess fat and volume before a breast lift is performed to remove excess skin and restore the breasts to a higher position.
Some patients have a breast lift and breast augmentation or breast reduction done at the same time
A mastopexy or breast lift is most often performed with the patient under general anesthesia at our surgical center in St. Louis.
Breast lift candidates should be healthy non-smokers with some degree of breast ptosis (sagging)
Alternatives to augmentation with breast implants include fat grafting and breast lifts
Yes, a breast lift can be combined with breast augmentation to enhance both lift and fullness or with breast reduction to achieve a more balanced, elevated shape.

Breast lift with implants address both the volume and position of the breasts, providing a fuller and more youthful look.
A breast lift is able to create a more youthful appearance of the breast ; however, it will not change the size of the breast.
Breast lift surgery is usually on an outpatient basis.
Breast augmentation is different from a breast lift . Implants add volume, while a lift improves breast position and sagging.
This can be combined with implant placement and is our most commonly used breast lift technique.
At Amelia, a breast lift includes bra line liposuction as need for better shape at no additional cost.
Though you’ll likely see improvements right after surgery, many patients see their breast lift results develop over the first year post-op.
Breast Lift generally runs $7,000–$14,000 per procedure, and each St. Louis clinic sets its own price. The biggest variables are the provider's experience level and the specific device or product used. Newer technology and senior injectors price at the upper end. Pricing is quoted in US dollars (USD). Initial results in 2–4 weeks, with full results developing over 3 months as collagen builds. St. Louis providers typically schedule follow-ups to track progress.
Results vary by patient, but most St. Louis providers report 6–18 months of sustained benefit from a full Breast Lift series.
The simplest test is where your nipple sits relative to the fold beneath your breast. If it sits at or below that fold, a lift is what repositions it, and implants alone will not fix that. If your breasts sit high enough but have lost fullness at the top, implants restore that volume. Many patients want both, which is a combined augmentation with mastopexy, a longer operation with a slightly higher revision rate but a single recovery.
Scars depend on how much lifting is needed. A minor lift may need only a scar around the areola. Moderate lifting adds a vertical line from the areola to the fold, called a lollipop. Significant lifting adds a horizontal scar along the fold, called an anchor. Scars are permanent, red for several months, and typically fade to pale lines over one to two years. Any surgeon offering a significant lift with no scars is describing something else.
Most patients hold results for ten years or more, but skin continues aging and gravity does not stop. Weight fluctuation and subsequent pregnancy are the two things that most reliably undo a lift, which is why surgeons generally advise finishing childbearing first. Wearing good support and maintaining stable weight extends the result meaningfully.
Many patients can, though a lift carries somewhat more risk to milk ducts and nipple sensation than augmentation does, because the nipple is repositioned. If future breastfeeding matters to you, say so clearly at consultation, since technique choices can preserve more of the ductal system. And if you plan to have children soon, waiting is generally the better decision anyway.
Almost never as a cosmetic lift. Breast reduction, which removes tissue as well as lifting, is sometimes covered when documented neck, back, or shoulder symptoms meet a carrier's criteria. If you have both sagging and significant volume causing physical symptoms, ask the surgeon's office to explore reduction coverage rather than assuming the whole thing is out of pocket.
