See 8 clinics
Kanawha City (MacCorkle Avenue SE)Downtown and Capitol StreetSouth HillsSouth Charleston

West Virginia’s capital keeps its aesthetic care on MacCorkle Avenue, the road that runs both banks of the Kanawha. In Kanawha City, The Facial Center is at 4307 MacCorkle Avenue SE and Bandak Plastic Surgery a block off it on 50th Street SE; across the river in South Charleston, West Virginia Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center at 4202 MacCorkle Avenue SW holds the largest book in the state we track, 1,244 reviews at 4.9. Thaxton Plastic Surgery is downtown on Capitol Street, Dermatology Associates & Surgical Center on Kenton Drive in the East End, and Living Well on Oakwood Road in South Hills. The two outer listings are Turner Medical and Almost Heaven Spa in Cross Lanes and The Facial Center’s second office in Hurricane, in Teays Valley.

Half of these eight are physician practices, which shapes the menu. Botox, dermal fillers and lip filler are on all eight, Xeomin and Radiesse at Bandak and Turner, Kybella at Dermatology Associates and Living Well, and Dermatology Associates alone lists Sculptra and PDO thread lifts. No tracked menu lists Dysport or Daxxify. The Facial Center’s two offices are the only SkinVive listings.

Devices thin out quickly. Microneedling is on seven menus and microdermabrasion on six, but RF microneedling reaches five, laser hair removal five, Morpheus8 three and laser skin resurfacing only two, at Dermatology Associates and Bandak. Laser tattoo removal is at Living Well and both Facial Center offices, CoolSculpting at Dermatology Associates and Thaxton, Turner is the one Ultherapy listing. The Facial Center carries the wellness shelf, semaglutide programs, hormone replacement therapy and hair restoration at both offices, with Living Well adding hormones and IV therapy and Bandak adding hair restoration.

Charleston is the least expensive injectable market we track in the region. Botox quotes $11 to 13 per unit, a dollar or two under Columbus and Lexington and $3 to 4 under Pittsburgh, filler $600 to 750 per syringe, and a three-session Morpheus8 package $2,200 to 2,800. Prices are flat across the metro; the dermatology groups and the surgeons quote the same band as the spas.

Weekends are closed. None of the eight opens Saturday or Sunday, so the useful edges are West Virginia Dermatology’s 7:30 opening and the 6 pm closes at Living Well and both Facial Center offices. The Facial Center in Hurricane works Monday, Wednesday and Thursday only. Patients drive in from Huntington, Beckley, Parkersburg, Nitro, St. Albans, Dunbar, Ripley and Logan, often an hour or more each way, which is why the physician practices book consultation and treatment on the same visit. Laser series start after the Sternwheel Regatta in July cools into fall and finish before Memorial Day on the river; injectables peak before Mountaineer and Marshall homecomings in October and again in December.

The eight average 4.84 across 2,326 reviews, more than half of them at West Virginia Dermatology. Two plastic surgeons, Thaxton and Bandak, and two dermatology groups sit on this list, so a patient who wants a physician’s hands on a syringe has four choices in a market of eight. Mark two or three clinics below and ClinicCompass delivers your consultation request to each.

FAQ

Common questions about med spas in Charleston

Is going to a med spa safe?

Yes, when you pick the right one. Med spas with physician oversight (an MD or DO medical director) and treatments performed by licensed RNs, NPs, PAs, or physicians have a strong safety record. The biggest safety risks come from undertrained operators using aggressive settings, off-brand products, or skipping proper screening. In Charleston, all clinics listed on ClinicCompass include verified Google ratings. Read the review themes (look for consistent mentions of cleanliness, professionalism, and clear communication) before booking.

What should I expect at my first med spa appointment?

Most first visits start with a 20–45 minute consultation (no actual treatment yet). The provider will ask about your goals, medical history, medications, and budget; they'll examine the relevant area and recommend specific treatments. You should leave with a written plan, clear pricing, and realistic expectations of results. If you feel rushed, pressured to commit on the spot, or upsold on treatments you didn't ask about, that's a red flag. Walk away and consult elsewhere.

What's the best age to start Botox?

There's no universal "right" age. Most providers recommend starting in your late 20s or early 30s for "preventative Botox," small doses to soften dynamic wrinkles before they set permanently. Starting later (40s, 50s) is also effective; you'll just be treating existing lines rather than preventing them. The best starting point is whenever expression lines start bothering you at rest, not just when you smile or frown.

Does insurance cover med spa treatments?

No, cosmetic treatments are elective and not covered by insurance. The exception: certain medical-grade uses (Botox for chronic migraines or excessive sweating, some lasers for medical skin conditions) may have insurance coverage when prescribed by a physician for medical reasons, not cosmetic. For all standard aesthetic treatments, expect to pay out of pocket. Many Charleston clinics accept HSA/FSA cards and offer financing through Cherry, CareCredit, or Affirm.

How do I know if a med spa is using real products?

Three checks: (1) Real Allergan, Galderma, AbbVie, or Revance products come in branded packaging. Your provider should be willing to show you the vial or box before injecting. (2) Pricing well below market is the biggest red flag: counterfeit or smuggled product is dramatically cheaper. (3) Loyalty program enrollment (Allē for Allergan products, ASPIRE for Galderma) requires the clinic to be a verified buyer of real product. If a Charleston clinic offers Allē or ASPIRE rewards, it's selling authentic product.

What's the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Both are botulinum toxin type A: same active mechanism, slightly different formulations. Dysport tends to onset 1–2 days faster and may spread slightly more (useful for broad areas like the forehead). Botox is more localized (useful for precise areas like around the eyes). Duration is similar (3–4 months for both). Per-unit pricing differs but the per-treatment cost is comparable. The biggest factor in your results is your injector's skill, not the brand.
